As an association committed to Muslims in the Netherlands, it is our task to maintain religious identity and inform Muslims about the need to actively participate in Dutch society. In this article we will explain the responsibility of Muslims from Beek (Municipality Montferland) to participate in society based on arguments from the Koran and Hadith. We will discuss five subcategories that show that participation is an essential responsibility for Muslims from Beek (Municipality Montferland).
The Qur'an emphasizes the importance of decent behavior and justice in numerous verses, as it is quoted in many verses, such as in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13): “O people, We have created you from male and female and We have made you into nations and tribes, that you might know one another. Indeed, the most noble among you in the sight of Allah is he who fears (Allah) the most.” Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also said: “The best among you are those who are best for their community.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 4239)
The Quran encourages Muslims to engage in constructive dialogue and interaction with people of other religions and cultures. Surah Al-'Ankabut (29:46) states: “And argue only with the people of the Book in the best manner, except the wrongdoers among them.” Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also said: “Whoever follows a path of seeking knowledge, Allah will make easy for him the path to Paradise.” (Saheeh Muslim 2699a)
Islam calls on Muslims to contribute to well-being and fairness in society. Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8) states: “Be steadfast in righteousness, testify for Allah, even if it is against your own relatives.” Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever provides for the needs of his fellow man, Allah will provide for his needs.” (Saheeh al-Bukhari 2442)
Islam emphasizes sincerity, reliability and keeping promises. Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:1) states: “O you who believe, keep your covenants.” Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Truthfulness leads to righteousness and righteousness leads to Paradise.” (Sahih Muslim 2607a)
Islam encourages Muslims to acquire knowledge and science and to contribute to development in the society in which Muslims live. Surah Al-Zumar (39:9) states: “Say: 'Are they equal, those who have knowledge and those who have no knowledge?'” The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever seeks knowledge, Allah will make easy for him the way to Paradise.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 224)
From the Quran and Hadith we can conclude that participation in society is a requirement for Muslims. Islam encourages Muslims to demonstrate decent behavior, engage in communication, contribute to prosperity and honesty, be sincere and trustworthy, and gain insight and contribute to progress. As a foundation, we want to encourage Muslims to actively participate in Dutch society and make a positive contribution to a peaceful and harmonious coexistence. The Quran and Hadith serve as sources that guide us to the obligation of active involvement in the society in which we live.
